Recently, HNK Rijeka has faced challenges in the HNL, with several draws resulting in the loss of valuable points. While the Bijeli have often been competitive, the lack of consistency in their game can be attributed to several tactical aspects that need adjustment to enhance performance on the pitch.
1. Formation Change The current 4-2-3-1 formation, often utilized, shows its weaknesses against teams that play with quick counters. Transitioning to a 3-5-2 could be a beneficial option, allowing Rijeka greater stability in midfield and quicker responses going forward. This formation allows for better possession control while enabling faster breakouts through wing players.
2. Increase in Pressing Intensity One of the key elements of modern football is high pressing. Rijeka should increase the intensity of their pressing game, particularly in the opposition half. By adopting this approach, the Bijeli could force opponents into mistakes and create more goal-scoring opportunities. Players like Tarik Barišić and Josip Špoljarić, who possess good physical attributes, could take on leading roles in this strategy.
3. Flexibility in Attack Rijeka should work on developing a more flexible attacking system. Currently, they rely too heavily on individual actions, while collective play and quicker ball movement could create more space for wingers and forwards. Developing better combinations between midfielders and strikers can bring additional dynamism and lead to more goals.
4. Defensive Organization Defensive organization also requires improvements, especially in situations when the team drops back. Maintaining a solid line and proper positioning of players can help prevent counter-attacks. Enhancing communication among defensive players can reduce the risk of errors and facilitate transitions into attack.
5. Development of Young Players Finally, Rijeka should invest more in the development of young players. Utilizing young talents from the Academy can bring additional energy and creativity to the game. Players like Dina Skender could be given more opportunities in the first team, further strengthening the squad.
Considering these suggestions, HNK Rijeka can upgrade their game and become a more competitive team in the HNL. With the right approach and adjustments, the Bijeli can once again become a powerful force in Croatian football.
