HNK Rijeka seeks Oblak replacement – Igor Vekić in focus

HNK Rijeka has clearly put its top priority on the table: bringing Slovenian goalkeeper Igor Vekić as a replacement for Jan Oblak. Coach Matjaž Kek, who led Vekić in the national team, is actively negotiating, and the player has turned down a Spanish offer to return to Rijeka.

Why is Vekić the right choice?

Igor Vekić, 28, spent the last three seasons with Danish side Vejle, where despite modest team results he earned praise for his saves. His reliability for the Slovenian national team, with five caps, makes him a logical substitute for Oblak. Vekić also rejected a Spanish second‑division offer, clearly showing his desire to play at Rujevica.

What obstacles stand in the way?

The first hurdle is Vekić’s health – he is still recovering from a finger injury that kept him out of summer international fixtures. The second is the high compensation Vejle demands. The club cannot currently spare large sums, but the expected sale of Toni Fruk should free up financial space for a multi‑million transfer.

How does this affect Rijeka’s season?

In the HNL, HNK Rijeka sits 4th with 53 points, 14 wins, 11 draws and 11 losses from 36 games, and its recent five‑match form reads WDDLL. The team has scored 49 goals and conceded 36, a +13 goal difference, and trails league leaders Dinamo Zagreb by 33 points. The latest 2‑0 win over Gorica on 23 May 2026 shows defense is key, and Vekić’s arrival could further solidify the back line.

When could the transfer be completed?

If Vejle agrees on a realistic fee and Vekić passes a medical, the signing could be finalized by the end of August. That would give Rijeka time to prepare for upcoming league challenges and possible European fixtures. With additional funds from Fruk’s sale, the club will have a larger budget for reinforcements, and Vekić could become the first‑choice goalkeeper.

What can fans expect?

Rijeka supporters are eagerly awaiting confirmation of the deal. If everything goes smoothly, Vekić will join a side that currently shows solid form and aims to close the gap at the top of the table. His presence could reduce goals conceded, which is vital for continuing the push for European spots.
