Damir Kreilach will play a farewell match for 1. FC Union against HNK Rijeka at Stadion Kantrida on Saturday at 19:17. The match marks the final appearance of the player who began his professional career in Rijeka and now works in the club's sporting leadership.

Kreilach returned to Rijeka at the start of 2025 and ended his playing career the following winter. He cited multiple injuries in a short span as the reason. "Many injuries within three months made me realise it was a bit too much to keep playing football," Kreilach said. He has since taken on a role in HNK Rijeka's sporting department, overseeing loan players and youth development.

In Berlin, he became a legend, making 157 appearances, scoring 33 goals and providing 18 assists for Union, with fans voting him into their 'Legenden-Elf' in January. The farewell game was initiated by fan groups from both clubs. Kreilach highlighted two fan choreographies that stood out to him. "Twice the Union fans made choreos for me: against Borussia Dortmund and at my farewell when I moved to the USA," he recalled.

Up to a thousand Union fans are expected to travel to Rijeka for the match. The kick-off time of 19:17 is symbolic, referencing the shirt numbers he wore in Berlin and Rijeka.

Kreilach remains in contact with people at the Berlin club, including president Dirk Zingler and former teammates. Although Union currently have just one point after four Bundesliga matchdays and sit bottom of the table, Kreilach is not worried. He expressed 100% confidence they will avoid relegation, describing Union as a stable club with incredible fans. His confidence may stem from the team's recent form, having recorded two wins, two draws, and one loss in their last five matches across all competitions.

For HNK Rijeka, this is a chance for a different meeting with Union, after losing 1-0 to them in a friendly at Kantrida just last week. Rijeka currently sit fifth in the HNL with 14 points from seven games, just two points behind leaders Dinamo Zagreb. This is part of a strong run of form that has seen them secure three wins, one draw, and only one loss in their last five league matches. Kreilach will play a short cameo for both Union and Rijeka in the farewell match, closing the circle on a career that started at this very stadium before he fully dedicates himself to his new duties at the club.
